We’re just getting started.

— Violet Edwards, District 6 Commissioner

Economic Opportunities

Violet understands that education, a prepared workforce, and economic prosperity go hand in hand. She has partnered with K-12 schools to hold STEM nights, build raised beds for gardening lessons, and transport students to extracurricular activities.

Violet spearheaded partnerships with Huntsville Utilities, Drake State Technical College, Calhoun Community College, and Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARGOG)  that are strengthening Madison County's workforce. District 6 facilitates Co-op opportunities for those just beginning their career and hands-on training for those transitioning careers.

As a successful small business owner, Violet knows the challenges of starting a business. District 6 collaborates with the Huntsville Metro Black Chamber of Commerce to provide entrepreneurs with networking opportunities and free monthly seminars.

Community & Quality of Life

Violet fought for investment in Madison County residents to ensure hard-working families living paycheck to paycheck did not lose the roof over their heads during tough times.

Violet fills in the gap for students in District 6 when their programs lack transportation for sporting events, band competitions, and field trips. Her charter bus transportation program opens the eyes of D6 students to opportunities as they travel to various destinations and experience new things.

Violet fought homelessness by securing funding for three housing programs to provide people in Madison County with a path from the streets to stability and self-sufficiency.

Violet preserves the legacy of District 6 by securing investments and advancements for the Robert "Bob" Harrison Senior Wellness and Advocacy Center and the community garden. Under Violet’s leadership, The Harrison Center membership has increased by 30%.

Support for Veterans

Violet understands that veterans are crucial to life as we know it because they risk themselves to protect our freedom. She sought the implementation and annually leads the charge of Operation Green Light—an effort to raise awareness and provide resources for military veterans readjusting to civilian life.

Because of Violet's leadership, Madison County now partners with the National Association of Counties (NACo),  the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO), and counties nationwide in illuminating county facilities in green light during November to let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Investing in our kids

Better opportunities come with a good education, and a good education can happen in the classroom with a textbook and through hands-on training. That’s why Violet has brought schools and community partners together to create programs that give students opportunities to reinforce the lessons learned in the classroom by applying their academic skills in a real-world context.

Violet spearheaded partnerships with Huntsville Utilities, Drake State Technical College, Calhoun Community College, and Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARGOG) that strengthen Madison County's career readiness. District 6 facilitates Co-Op opportunities for those just beginning their career and hands-on training for those transitioning careers. No matter what path our students take—trade school, community college, four year university, or immediately entering the workforce after high school—Commissioner Violet Edwards is deeply committed to their success.
